Today I wanted to share a compiled list of my favorite places to shop secondhand in (or near) Grand Rapids for those friends who also live in the area, or for those who may be visiting soon! This was a post that has been in my drafts for a few months, and I have slowly been adding to it as I find new places I like. However, thanks to COVID-19, thrifting has been put on hold for the foreseeable future. But I still wanted to share this post since it will hopefully be a helpful one in the future. I was hoping to add a few more to the list before posting, but again, a pandemic can change plans, ya know?
Bethany’s Thrift Store– 2820 29th St SE Grand Rapids
This has been one of my favorite thrift stores over the past year! It is a bit smaller, but they keep everything really well organized, it feels a lot cleaner than Goodwill, and they have a great book section. Their book section isn’t even that big, but somehow I ALWAYS can find a title or two that I have read or want to read! This was also where I bought a little gingham sign for this DIY project. Prices are also great, and I always have pleasant interactions with the employees!
New 2 You Shoppe- 2929 29th Street Southeast, Grand Rapids
This one is right by Bethany’s Thrift Store and worth a stop in as well! They always seem to have a TON of stuff, especially home decor/kitchen stuff. My housemate and I found quite a few of our Christmas decorations here last fall too! They have their home decor organized by color too, which makes it easier if you know what you are looking for. They also have a very large and well organized section of books, and if you are looking for a well known title, it is probably here!
Goodwill- 3270 29th St SE, Kentwood
If you are heading to the previous two stores, this Goodwill is right down the street and one of my favorites in Grand Rapids. I will say that sometimes things are a bit overpriced at this Goodwill, but usually the clothes prices are reasonable and they have a wide selection of clothes. There are actually a lot of Goodwills around the Grand Rapids Area, but this is my personal favorite. Above are both pictures I took at their location on two different trips to send to a friend. I didn’t end up buying the top since I had just bought a similar one, but I did buy the bowls for $1.99! Which actually goes against what I said above about some things being overpriced, so it really does just depend on the item.
Goodwill- 2700 Kraft Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546
This Goodwill is a bit of a drive, and I find it to be hit or miss. I actually wasn’t even going to include it since I hadn’t had much luck recently, but then when I went about a month ago I ended up finding a handful of things I wanted. Above are two of my favorite finds from that day: a California state Starbucks mug that my friend ended up getting for $1 and this gold basket for $3.99 that I ended up getting!
Style Encore – 2650 E Beltline Ave SE, Grand Rapids
This is owned by the same franchise as Plato’s Closet, but I always have WAY better luck here. Plus the employees at Style Encore are way more friendly and helpful than any Plato’s employee I have encountered. I haven’t been to any other locations of Style Encore, so I am not sure if this one is pretty standard as far as they go. But it is always clean and organized well. And they do quite a few sales throughout the year, so I have gotten pieces for just a dollar or two before!
My Sister’s Closet Thrift- 8200 Shaw Lake Rd, Middleville, MI 49333
This is a bit of a hike from Grand Rapids… a little over 30 minutes from where I live. So I’m going to be honest, I haven’t made it there yet. And thanks to coronavirus, I’m not sure if I will get the chance. BUT. I follow them on Instagram and I already know it is the cutest shop and the sweetest girl who runs it. They also add new things to their website every week, so even if you aren’t local you can still buy secondhand from them. I love that it is already curated a bit so you don’t have to dig as much to find some gems. And I have quite a few friends who have been to it and loved it, so I know it is good. So I guess this list is for me too 😉
Have you been to any of these thrift stores? Even if you don’t live in the area, tell me your favorite place to thrift in the comments below!
