DIY Blanket Scarf!

If you follow more than a few fashion blogs, you will have seen blanket scarves in hundreds of outfits over the past few months. But what happens if you want one but can’t find a pattern you like at a price you like? You make your own of course!

Over Christmas break I decided I was going to make my own no-sew blanket scarf. I went to Hobby Lobby and JoAnn’s, but neither of them had any good plaid fabric that could be worn throughout the winter and not just for Christmas. I was then shopping at a different store when I looked over see a fabric store that I didn’t even know existed called Hancock Fabrics. I went in and found a fabric I loved after just a few minutes. The fabric did cost around $10 per yard originally, but after coupons I got it for around $7 total!

What You Need:

– 2 yards of fabric

-good scissors

-a tape measure (optional)

I chose to buy 2.5 yards of fabric because I felt it was better to be safe than sorry.  I ended up only using 2 yards though, so my dimensions were roughly 58 by 72. I know some people prefer to have it be a square, but I ended up really liking the way I cut mine!

While many people immediately think of plaid when they think of blanket scarves, you can buy any pattern you want! I would recommend plaid or stripes to make the cutting easier. All you have to do it cut down one of the lines!

Once you have cut it, begin to pull threads out like this. I ended up just pulling them out until I got a look I liked. If you cut really straight, you can pull a string out from one end to the other really quickly and easily. One of my sides I didn’t cut as straight, so it took a bit longer. Since it is frayed, it still looked completely find in the end!

This is the end result! A cute and cozy blanket scarf for just a couple of dollars!

Doing this project definitely inspired me to work with more fabric for future projects. I never really do since I don’t have a sewing machine or know how to sew really. I worked with a neighbor to make a quilt about 5 years ago, but that is about the extent of my sewing knowledge lol! I have been seeing tons of cute no-sew ideas on Pinterest though, so we will see how brave I get. 😉

Have you ever made a scarf? Will you make one? Share in the comments!
