Love it or leave it: Duolingo

This week I wanted to talk to you guys about a new app I found over Christmas break. I had heard about Duolingo from other people online and I finally downloaded the app about 6 weeks ago.

First off, I love the fact that Duolingo has a test you take at the beginning so you can skip levels if you already know some of the language. I am in my 4th year of Spanish and I have been to a Spanish speaking country before, so I know a pretty good amount. But there is always room to improve, so that’s why I tried Duolingo. I was able to skip quite a few levels, and once I began, I was at a level that seemed perfect for me. Not too hard, but not extremely easy either.

I also like the different ways they have that you can learn it. In each “lesson” you listen and type some words, look at pictures, speak words back, etc. It is a great way to make sure you actually are learning.

I also like that it has levels. It makes it fun, especially for someone who is competitive like myself. You can also choose how long you want to do it each day and make a goal for every day. I chose the smallest goal since I already am busy and I do take an actual Spanish class.

Overall, I really like the app, but I did find one downside. Since I am taking a Spanish class, it got a little confusing to keep straight what I was learning on Duolingo and what I was learning in class. So I would recommend using Duolingo over long breaks or if you aren’t taking a class to learn that language. Or if I wanted to learn a different language like French, I think it would be fine to learn it on Duolingo while taking a Spanish class. So for now, I am not using Duolingo, but once I graduate I am sure I will begin again!
