How To Read More

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say that they wish they could read but they just don’t have time, I am 99.9% sure I could pay for college. Ok, that is a slight exaggeration but honestly people use that excuse all the time, so I am here today giving tips to help anyone be able to read more.

-skip watching tv or a movie to relax and pick up a book instead-
When I am into a good book I realized that I barely even open my computer or watch tv. Whenever I find myself needing entertainment, I just pick up my book instead.

-carry a book everywhere-
Take advantage of time riding in a car or waiting around. I always take a book if I am going to an appointment because doctors and dentists are notorious for running behind.

-set a routine-
During the summer I found that I was reading for at least 20 minutes or so before bed every night, and that meant that I was able to read even more books!

-set a goal-
Give yourself a goal of reading X number of pages each day, or reading for X number of minutes each day. Sometimes this can end up feeling like a chore, especially if I choose a certain number of pages. My goal is to read at least 20 minutes every day unless I am really busy, so I just set a timer and read until it goes off. Some days it is difficult, but I find myself reading more after the timer goes off most days!

-find books that interest you-
Just because Sally and John read a certain book and loved it does not mean you will as well. I used to try to finish a book even if I really didn’t like it, but now if I find myself dreading to read a book I just will stop reading. It is not worth it when there are so many great books out there!

-get books from your library-
Some people don’t read a lot because books can get expensive. But I rarely ever buy a book and instead I request them from my library. It is also a great way to motivate me to read because once they become available for me, I know I have 2 weeks to read it before it needs returned. And if it is a book I really wanted to read I won’t put it off since I don’t want to risk not being able to finish it.

-use reading as a reward-
Since reading is something I enjoy, I do sometimes use it as a reward. One example is if I complete my to-do list then I can spend 30 minutes reading. This motivates me to work more efficiently so I can get back to my book!
